I have served in the state dept. in Egypt on 3 separate occasions, over the past 20 years. I can assure you that our files are FULL of women who have been fleeced, harassed, groped, lied to, cheated and married to an
Egyptian fellow who was married with or without kids. I am sorry Cairo Girl that you and your mom experienced what you did but rest assured, YOU ARE NOT ALONE. You have read the other stories, they are true and actually reflect very little as to the magnitude of the problem. The state dept. can only do so much and as I said after multiple postings in Egypt, I can assure you that this is not a new problem. Sadly, men in Egypt have not advanced with the times and often have no respect for women, treat them as 3rd class citizens, in the smaller towns force them to stay in the house, prevent them from working and still practice ancient practices that harm women's private parts. All human beings, men and women need to stand up against these behaviors that hold Egypt back and more importantly hurt 50 percent of the population.
