Car Permit and Insurance Questions

My family is currently living in Guatemala and is beginning to plan for travels further South. We drove our car down from the States and have a few questions about having a car temporarily in El Salvador. I know how to obtain a car import permit at the border but I've been unable to find answers to the following:

1) How long is the import permit good for (I'm assuming 90 days but I read 60 on one forum which does not make sense since I can stay for 90 days w/o a visa)?

2) Is it it easy to get the car permit renewed/extended if we stay in the country longer than the initial duration?

3) It appears that car insurance is not required but I just wanted to triple check. Es verdad?

ONE LAST QUESTION...is there a per person charge for crossing the border from Guatemala? I've read posts from people who say it's free and other's who say there is a $10/person tourist card.

Thanks for any info you can provide.
