Hope that all of you contemplating moving to Fiji are doing your homework. The "interim" govt (from a coup of Dec. 5, 2006) didn't like the results of a recent court decision. The President then announced he was throwing out the constitution, firing all the magistrates (judges) and ruling by decree. He also put back in place the "Public Emergency Regulations" which include placing police and "information officers" at every media outlet to prevent them from printing/broadcasting anything "bad". They're also trying to control the flow of info outside of Fiji.
While the general state of the public is quiet at the moment, there is potential for flare ups. Soldiers are stationed at key points around the capital.
There's been a backlash from other governments. Check your embassies, state departments, etc. before planning travel. As in all cases, check the situation thoroughly before making any commitments that could cost you in the longterm.
