French health care

I'll be returning to France as a retiree on an American pension. Since I worked and lived there for a long time long ago I paid into their health care/securite social. I will be eligible for it but am wondering if a private long-term health care plan will be necessary and when to get it, i.e. is there an age cut-off or pre-existing condition restriction. It's hard to find out just what they pay. Thanks for any input.
