information & advise please on Charente in france

hello i am strongly considering moving my family from the northwest uk to france.
the area that we like the sound of is charente, more specifically around confolens /angouleme/ poitiers, we are a family my husband is an electronics engineer & mechanic & all round fix it, I am a 'do anything legal' for work but we have an income from the uk that will suffice for the residency requierments.
our sons are 10,7,5, very bright noisy normal kids, but they don't have much in common with the rather rough kids where we now live & tend to stay together a lot, we have 2 dogs & a cat, we like to go out as a family, my boys love being outside & in/on the water, we all like history, art, & music & science,
I am trying to find a place that is less crowded, cleaner, less drugs etc & where we can afford a bigger house & big garden, we are quiet in general & don't seem to upset neighbours etc but we are friendly & willing to learn about & fit in with french ways, I am not tyring to take a bit of britain with me as it seems some do!
SO DO THE EXPATS WHO KNOW THINK WE WILL FIT IN? & where is a good area for us? many thanks to anyone who replies or even just reads it all. bye
