visiting Lyon to test the waters of living in France

Hi everyone,

After reading a number of posts in this forum, I'm truly impressed with the camaraderie of the participants and their willingness to help one another in our mutual quest to live in France.

Like all of you, the thought of living in France is an intriguing proposition. I'm 30 years old, a professional in health care marketing, and if I decide to stay in the States, I'll probably buy a house in five years and limit my contacts to France with an occasional trip now and then.

Instead of settling for that fate, however, my heart is eager to explore the idea of relocating to France. I speak French fairly fluently (thanks to the efforts of a circle of French-speaking friends) and have received both my Bachelor's and Juris Doctorate. I also have some experience in sales and marketing, which I hope will count for something to a French company some day.

To test the waters of living in France, I'm planning on eventually moving to Lyon for 6 - 9 months, depending on how long my two years' worth of savings will last me. Can anyone advise me on what things I should do to make the move as beneficial as possible? I'm not concerned so much about finding work during my stay, but I do need help in finding out what neighborhoods are good for a single girl to live in, what is a decent price for renting a studio or 1-bedroom, and how can I start exploring long-term career opportunities while I'm there? Also, if anyone has any advice on improving my chances of getting a long-term stay residency visa, I would really appreciate that. It seems like just getting there is half the battle.

Thanks in advance for any help you can give me. It's so exciting to hear from people who are adventurous in their life choices.

Cheers,

Audrey
