A worried UKer

Hi, I live in South Yorkshire and would love to move to France but feel very wary of making the first step. I have a few issues i need to think through before making the step and am not much of a risk taker so I am trying to get as much information as possible. My husband works for a company that have offices in Paris but as the company has offices down south in England it doesn't mean we would have to live there as he is an engineer and works from home. I would love to live in France as I am becomingly increasingly disappointed in this country and no longer feel like it is my home but i am more than anything worried about my children growing up there, school etc. I have 3 children, 10, 5 and 4 and really don't have any problem making friends but I would be more worried how they settled down than myself. Could anyone already there or just thinking about moving in similar circumstances give me some advice? I am currently living in a village about 7 miles from the town centre and love the quiet way of life, are there any areas anywhere in France that anyone can recommend.
Any advice no matter how trivial you may think would be grately appreciated.
