charente area any advise?

hi we are hoping to move to charente/ charente maritime soon, i would welcome advise on the different areas & towns, we want a peacefull life but have children so need schools, our ideal is semi countryside that is say 1/2 hour max' from bigger town, we don't mind if it is on a tourist area or not as we are not looking to have b&b or gites as our means of support,
as our budget is only 100,000 sterling i don't expect a mansion! but i would like to be near sea or river or lakes ( well i can dream).
my husband is a blacksmith / fabricater & mechanic /electronic engineer, i am a beautician/ hairdresser but can try almost anything,
we can do some renovations but don't want to be rebuilding a ruin,
