Non EU buying house in France

I returned from a 6 week trip to France and while there looked at property. I want to purchase a house where I may live. I am trying to find exactly what paperwork I must complete to make this happen. I will not be needing a mortagage nor will I be looking for work. One immoblier stated that I just needed a "Residency Permit". If you can answer this, please do so. If you can refer me elsewhere, I would be grateful for that. I have found a house and want to get going on the rest of my life. I am from the US, so I imagine I will at least need a Long Term Visa? Thanks!
