Shipping boxes to Paris, work and study visas

Hi,
I'm a law student in New York, and will be moving to Paris in either the summer or fall of 2007. I will be studying at the Sorbonne for two years, and have no firm plans to return to the US afterwards. I am looking for an internship in Paris for the summer, so I may be moving as early as May, or as late as September. I need to ship my things, but am not sure about the best options. I will not be moving furniture, just books, clothing and some household goods. It should be no more than about 20 boxes, tops. I don't mind putting most of it on a slow boat. Can anyone recommend a carrier or service? I will pack myself.

Also, if anyone has any insight about visas for the type of trip I'm planning, please let me know (10 weeks working followed by 2 years at the university, during which part-time work would be nice).
