E106 and Carte Vitale

I have been working in France since June 2005 and have a UK issued E106 form which is valid until 31May 2008.
I now plan to take early retirement (at 62) in June this year and settle in France.

I would like to know if I can apply for a Carte Vitale in June this year , after which I would take out top-up insurance. If this should not be the case, is the E106 form still valid after my retirement (June this year until 31May 2008) bearing in mind that the E106 was issued whilst employed in France.
After 31May 2008 how should I proceed? As I shall still be less than the UK recognised state pension age of 65, I understand that I cannot apply for an E121 form. Can I however still apply for a Carte Vital?
