Journalist seeking Paris cost-cutting tips

I'm a freelance travel writer doing a piece for The Washington Post on cost-cutting tips for Europe's most expensive cities. I'd appreciate any very specific tips on Paris -- lodging, eating, sightseeing and local transportation. An example: The Louvre and other museums are free on Sundays. Free bicycles are available this summer.
