I've moved to Lyon 3 weeks ago and found out that when you work for yourself it is very difficult to rent a permanent appartment/house in Lyon. I am in the process of writing a book and will be in Lyon for the next three years researching and writing my book. Apparently one needs 3 months salary payment statements in order to prove that you can afford paying your rent (I am simplifying this), or you need a guarantor, someone who would be willing to sign that they will pay your rent if you don't. I am financially secure and can support myself with the funds I have. My bank is willing to guarantee this. This however is not acceptable in France. I offered to pay the rent in advance, but there is a law against this. I am forced to rent a furnished apartment, which one can only do for a short period because of tax implications for the proprietor. So in the next few weeks, I will be moving 3 times. My stuff that I had sent to Lyon with a removal company will arrive on 3 January 2010 and as things stand now, I will have to arrange for storage. This implies further costs.
I've contacted a company called Loca-pass, but you have to be younger than 35 to qualify for them helping you. I am in the process of obtaining my 'carte de séjour compétences et talents' from the Préfecture in Lyon. My visa has been approved in my home country and obviously all the necessary documents were submitted and accepted before my departure. Does anyone have any suggestions as to how to go about this?
Thank you!
