possible restrictions for traveling outside of France

Hello, I'm updating my previous post...
It appears to continue with the long-stay visa, it will cost us about $2,000 in Marseille, plus medical exams. Does anyone know if we are restricted from traveling outside of France while waiting for our appointments?

Another option is to change our plane reservations and only stay 89 days and abandon the long-stay visa application. That would entail about $1,200 in changing airplane reservation fees.

We are a family of 4 - tourists - not working while here. We didn't know trying to stay for 105 days was going to be so expensive; we would have gone the 89 day route.

Any advice would be great. Not changing our reservations and staying the 105 days is a no-no I assume.
