Desiring to Move to France

I would like to buy a place in paris and am considering moving there. I am a US citizen.

How do i obtain the proper visa in order to live there? From what i have read the only way to get a long term carte de sejour is to be married to a french person. Is that true? If i can prove my financial independence will i be allowed to move there? Does anyone know if a US citizen can just move to France and, if so, what needs to be done prior to moving there?
