Desiring to Move to France

I am looking to move to France and eventually buy a place in Paris. I am american. How do i obtain the proper paperwork and visa ahead of time? Am i able to obtain a long term visa if i prove my financial means? What other things will i need to prove? Can an American just move to France and obtain a long term carte de sejour?
