Odd Visa Question

Howdy all,

My wife and I are considering buying property in France as a retirement home, but our planned use of the place seems to complicate visa issues... at least I think.

We want to spend only 6 months a year, from March through August. As that is only 6 months in France and then 6 back in the US, how would we handle our visas? Would we need to apply each and every year for a 6 month visa before we go?

If we decided to rent a different place every year, instead of purchasing one, can we apply for the visa with one address, get to France and when we find a good property to rent, change addresses with the appropriate office?

Thanks all in advance. My wife and I have spend many happy vacations all over France, usually for 1-2 months at a time so I feel we know what we are getting ourselves into, but the visa thing drives me nuts!
