Health System - please help

My partner and I (57 and 55) are planning moving to the Herault Department next spring. I have owned a studio flat there for about 10 years so we are familiar with the area and plan to live there.

We are in the midst of planning and are finding the health system confusing and worrying. Clearly its an important part of our move but we don't know where to start. I have a moderate pension and we have some income from property elsewhere so we don't propose working in France.

Is there anyone out there who can help guide us through the process step by step? It seems that health insurance is very expensive and getting a carte vitale doesn't seem likely.

Can you help put our minds at ease?

Any help would be hugely appreciated.
