Taxation in France

My partner and I are both British and looking to buy and renovate a property in the Langeudoc Roussilon area. We will be retiring there and not looking for work, we also have private health plans.
However, our income is not huge and on discussing our move recently, we were told that foreigners are targetted to pay huge amounts in tax on everything. Can someone who actually lives there give me a true picture of what we can expect.
