Where in France

Dear fellow expats (already done and to be)!
My partner and I want to move to France but simply cannot settle on an area - there are far too many places to choose from and the internet is simply overwhelming.. Please assist us with at least a starting point given our requirements. I appreciate this is a very wide brief but we just don't know where to start. I would just say I love the look of Brantome .... and we are both gardeners if that makes any difference !

1. we would like English expats around us (but not exclusively)
2. gite business required so must be in or close to a good tourist area
4. decent size town or village nearby
5. we favour village over rural but still want peace and quiet
