staying cool in summer

Hello,
We'll be living in Nice, France for eight months but will need to find a cooler place for the summer months that is not super expensive. We were thinking of the Alps, since we believe most people gravitate to the coasts in summer, and we like taking rural walks. Can folks recommend places that we might not have considered? Thank you.
