Eurail Global pass, rental car or combination of the two?

Hello. For 22 day potential travel through France, Germany, Poland, The Netherlands, Czech Republic and Italy, would you recommend using a Eurail Global pass, renting a car for free style travel or a combination of the two?

My spouse and oldest son are flying into Amsterdam early March 2018, flying out of Frankfurt Germany 22 days later.

Mainly WWII historical locations trip.

Please comment on your thoughts for ease and freedom of travel from personal experience or from shared experiences from others doing similar travel.
