Timing - it's everything?

My wife and I are planning to relocate to the Pezenas area in March of 2020. We will have a pension income as well as my consultant work, (remotely for a U.S. customer), so financially, I think we're set.

My question is, how far in advance should we plan to come over for some serious house rental shopping? We've visited the area a few times and already have acquaintances and budding friendships, (with both English and French speakers). Is September 2019 far enough in advance, without being too far in advance, to find a furnished house to rent for six to twelve months?
