Dordogne?

Hi all We are currently preparing to move to France(from the UK), and are planning to stay in the areas We choose for a few weeks, then maybe rent for a couple of months before purchasing Our home.
Can any Expats please recommend areas to try We are thinking of Southern Charentes/Dordogne?
Would like to be walking/cycling distance from some shops/
I would also need to be near some Farms where i could buy fresh Milk & eggs as i do in the UK.
