Motorway tolls

We are currently starting a 2 week trip driving around the Limousin and Dordodgne. We drove a long way down the A 20 today from Chateauroux and exited at Montinac. Although seeing signs for a Peage on this stretch we didn’t go through a barrier to collect a ticket. However when we came off at Montinac there was a peage where we had to pay. There was no slot to insert a card. We stopped and watched as a French driver inserted his credit card without putting in a ticket. So we paid with a contactless card, the barrier opened and we drove on. However when we checked the transaction we have been charged 120€!!! Help - what did we do wrong or is it really this expensive?
