French address for visa

My husband and I are planning to apply for the long stay visa and buy a property in France to live in. We need an address in France for the visa application. We plan to rent while we look for a property. How did others manage this? We understand we need a rental agreement for a year or at least a renewable contract. Has anyone managed this with a long-stay gîte rental? Any advice will be appreciated.
