French language test

I know to apply for citizenship, you have to take a French exam. I speak French pretty fluently, but my partner is just starting to learn. For those who have take it, how hard is the French language test? And I’ve heard they may make it a condition for residency not just citizenship. I think a politician just floated that as an idea. Does it have any legs?
