Hi! I am new here and in need of advice.
I want to move to Germany with my best friend. We are actually in a relationship but we want to meet in person before we make it “official”. We’ve known each other six years and want to get married. If you had asked earlier this year or before, we thought we’d be getting married this November.
Well the thing is, she’s disabled and receives benefits from Germany. I’m disabled and waiting to be approved for benefits from the US. I’ve been trying almost 4 years now (i am only 24 but have schizoaffective).
My disability lawyer advises me not to go to Germany or get married. But I can’t imagine not doing those things.
Can someone answer a few questions of mine?
If I move to Germany, and keep my US citizenship, can I keep my disability benefits? Or does Germany have a system that would include me?
Do I need an international marriage lawyer to help with our situation?
We truly believe we’d be much happier together and I’m more than happy to move to Germany (I’ve never actually been there but I’ve heard amazing things and am tired of the US). I just need help making it happen. Of course the money will come later, but I want to figure everything out in the meantime. Thank you!
