First time in Greece and don't know where to start!

This isn't necessarily a best places to live question, more so how to live in Greece. I am on a 2 year visa and I want to make most of my time. That doesn't mean I want to travel and see everything. I am moving to Greece for a slower pace of life, weather, food, and to learn a new culture. What I appreciate about the Greek people is their hospitality. I am looking for a city, or town, where I can become a part of the community for as long as I am there. Any recommendations on cities or towns that isn't heavily touristy? I have my eyes set on Kalamata.
