How to getting to Lake Atitlan from Mexico

Hello, We are currently in Puerto Escondido Mexico we are planning to go to Lake Atitlan by Bus. What is the best route to get to Lake Atitlan. I have heard of 2 routes we can take the first is from Puerto Escondido Mexico to Tapachula Mexico then to Atitlan. The second route is from Puerto Escondido Mexico to San Cristobal Mexico then to Atitlan. Which route is the safest and shortest? I am traveling with my family which includes a 1 year old. Any suggestion would be greatly appreciated.
