When moving to Guatemala from the U.S. I am considering bringing some exotic pets (boa constrictor and monitor lizard). Are there any restrictions or laws in Guatemala regarding the importation of exotic animal species into Guatemala?
Also, do specific localities within Guatemala (for example, Sololá) have exotic pet bans or exotic pet ordinances? The reason I ask this is because in the United States exotic pet bans are everywhere.
I have searched online for information about exotic pet laws in Guatemala (as well as neighboring countries such as Mexico) but I cannot find any information -- the only results I get on Google are pages about exotic pet laws in the U.S. For example, when I try to look up exotic pet laws in Mexico the search results always show pages for laws in the U.S. state of New Mexico.
So in terms of bringing exotic pets to Guatemela, these are the questions I would have:
1 - Are there any laws prohibiting certain species, either via import into the country or within local departments?
2 - Would there be any issues driving from the U.S. to Guatemala (acrosss Mexico) with exotic pets, would there be any red tape, and would there be any issues when attempting to bring the exotic pets back into the U.S. (when revisiting the U.S.)?
Information online about bringing pets to Guatemala is generally only about cats and dogs, so this is why I am asking this question.
Also, are there any restrictions on brining domestic (but not cat/dog) animals into Guatemala? For example: miniature horse, pig, etc. And for those who do bring such animals with them to Guatemala, which parts of Guatemala allow people to keep a horse or other livestock on their property?
