Local Phone advice

I have a couple of phones that I use when me and members of my family visit Guatemala. One is SIM-d to Claro and the other to Tigo.

Someone told me that if there is no activity on the phone for 3-months, you lose your number and any credit that you had on the phone? I'm thinking that there may be times where our Guat breaks might exceed 3-months. I know that there are online ways by which you can add minutes to the phone while we are out of Guatemala and I'm told that this will be viewed on the account as "activity", thereby resetting the 3-month clock.

Can anyone verify this or shed any further advice?
