Moving Advice?

So I need a little bit of help. I've opted to complete a gap year and have decided that I want to live in Xela, Guatemala for a year. I've traveled to Xela twice and have made connections at a language school in which I would be able to teach English to their instructors to assist with their teaching of Spanish to English speakers. But I'm a little confused about the process. I'm basically trying to figure out if I would need to apply for residency for a year or if the immigrant VISA on my passport would suffice. I would be bringing pets with (already familiar with that process because I work at a clinic that does health certificates) but I'm just wondering if living on a perpetual tourist VISA for a year would be difficult with my cats? Any advice appreciated!
