duty taxes

I'm having a VERY hard time learning about duty taxes-- the cost per item. I've been told I have to get a NIT and then I can declare a very low value for my possessions for duty taxes. But my fear is, that without knowing how much the actual taxes are, I'll get there and then be hit with a HUGE tax bill. anyone have some ideas, suggestions, advice? thanks
