Patients with anal / rectal symptoms and symptoms related to ‘motions’ report to doctors that they have ‘piles’. The term ‘piles’, however, refers only to the a condition where in the blood vessels present in the anal canal enlarge, get congested and cause bleeding and sometime, pain and mass. It is important not to ignore rectal symptoms. They may be indicative of other diseases like ‘fissures’ or ‘fistulae’. Rarely, they may also be the beginning symptoms of serious diseases like cancer. Hence, it is prudent to get a medical checkup if rectal symptoms are present.

Piles (also known as Hemorrhoids) and their symptoms, which are one of the most common afflictions in the Western world, are also seen commonly in India.
