Search Housing in Ireland - When ist the right time?

I am planning to move from Germany to Newbridge/Naas in the beginning of January.

I will start my work on January, 2nd and my familiy (wife, 3 kids) plans to to follow in the middle of January.

What would be a good point in time to do the house-search ? On the one hand I would like to avoid paying rent for December on the other hand my kids would be happy to have a bed to sleep on in the middle of January.
