Wannabe Expats

Hi all. My hubby and I have recently started seriously considering moving away from America. It won't be until I am done with my nursing degree (about 5 years). My husband is a heavy equipment operator doing site work and road work. Our first choice destination would be Ireland. We love the idea of living in Ireland where you get the "small town" vibe. I have read lots about weather, good and bad. I have read that the people are welcoming for the most part. I have read that the economy is in pretty poor shape with a lot of unemployment. I have read that their healthcare system is subpar. High cost of living, etc. etc. So, why do I still want to move there despite all this?!! I will also hold out hope that things will improve over the next five years...

I currently homeschool my children and plan on continuing that so finding schools is not of particular concern for me.

We are hoping for new worldly experiences. We want our kids to be able to see and enjoy the world, not just one little dot in America. My family heritage is from Ireland. We own two homes in California and are projecting that we could sell both homes and purchase a home in Ireland outright which would eliminate the need for a mortgage, and that's a dream in and of itself!

Would we be crazy for doing this? Would we be jeopardizing our kids' futures as far as college and job opportunities go? I have also been told that Great Britain might be a better bet in Europe as far as jobs and economy and such... When I looked at real estate in England, it was a lot of attached housing and we really want a detached house with land, like .5 acre minimum which I found a lot of in Ireland real estate listings.

Any advice/opinions are greatly appreciated!!
