applying for a visa while in ireland?

Hello everybody. I'm Bree and I'm new to this forum. I have been searching a bit and cannot seem to find any information on this. Anyway, I am an American, and I am planning to go to Ireland in December or January of this year to do some volunteer work. While there, if I can find an actual paying job, I would like to stay there and work. My question then would be---- is it possible to apply for a work visa WHILE in Ireland, or would I have to exit the country/return to my country in order to apply? The first couple of months that I am going to be there, I wouldn't need a visa as it's not necessary for me for less than 90 days. but since I don't have a job there or am 100% sure if I can get one, I don't want to waste the time or money now to get one. Is this possible?
I currently live in Russia, and here, any time someone needs a new visa they do not need to go back to their home country, but just need to exit the country. I wouldn't mind leaving Ireland for a couple days in order to get an overnight type of visa, but really do not want to have to fly back all the way to the states.
hopefully someone can give me some help with this. and sorry in advance if this question has already been answered, but I couldn't find It on here.
