England to Ireland - a few questions...

We (Husband, me, children and possibly grandchildren) are interested in moving to Ireland -probably on a trial basis at first- but will need to be able to commute to England on a regular basis so need to look into everything carefully. Could anyone answer a few questions?
My grandparents were Irish, is this of any benefit?
We're both self-employed but our earnings are very unpredictable, sometimes we do well sometimes we don't, how does this work in Ireland?
We work in arts education/film/music both traditional and digital. I've read conflicting info about how these industries are doing at the moment, can anyone give me a clear picture?
Is home education supported?
Is there anywhere to avoid?
