Buying a car

I've made it across the pond and had secured accommodation near Limerick where I'll be going to school. The accommodation requires that I have a car. So I found a great VW Golf for €800. Just called to get a quote for insurance and its three times the amount I'm paying for the car because I have an international drivers license.

I'm feked.

Is it possible that I'm just talking to the wrong company? How hard would it be to get an Irish drivers license? I recall having heard expensive things.

Do I have any chance of hope? Or am I further behind the eight ball than I was two weeks ago when I arrived early to find somewhere to live only to be confronted by a rental housing crisis? Only now school starts on Monday!!!
