Dual Residency Self Employed advice.

I have an unusual lifestyle.

My partner is Irish and I'm from the UK.

I am spending an increasing amounts of time in the country. I intend to go back and forth regularly. Around half the time. in each country, so will be living and working in both.

She is not in a position to move from Ireland, and we are happy with this lifestyle as we both want to balance time with family.

I am self employed sole trader for a decade. I can work from anywhere. I have no employees.

My clients are mostly in North America. Some in the UK and had Australian and other Commonwealth clients. No Irish clients yet.

I can work with just a laptop, but typically use extra equipment like monitors and other devices. Other costs are are your sundries and rent electricity, etc. But it is fairly lean.

I have property income in the UK and own a a property, which I live in when I'm in the UK.

I have read a bit about the Anglo-Irish treaties and the dual taxation treaty. However still not sure how to best to approach this.

My client are the same regardless of where I'm working. I set up contract with them, and I woudl work with them regardless of where I am.

As I understand I am taxable in Ireland anyway.

As I understand as I have property and family in the UK, that would make "treatied resident' in the UK, under the dual taxation/dual residency arrangement, which is bilateral circa the 70s.

So I would pay tax in Ireland for work in Ireland.I would pay full tax in UK for my business and property income, with relief for the Irish tax. Is thsi correct?

I do reside in a border county when in Ireland, but this might not always be the case. I also wan to maximise my options. I prefer to have a home office rather then rent a separate office.

This issue I'm faced with is I'm not sure how this would apply to self employment. Obviously I have a right to work due to the Anglo Irish treaties. But it I not like I'm workign for too different employer of coming over specifically to work with an Irish company.

Could I simply make a calculation based on the time spent in Ireland? Does it matter that these are the same contracts with same clients?

I would have some equipment in each country, and it would be possible to divide hours based on each contract. Should I treat these as separate businesses Should one use the services of the other. Should I form companies, e.g. one subsidiary then take a salary from both, etc.

Anyone with similar experience?

I plan to ask the tax authorities, but I'm also keen not to put my foot in it. I also may wish to buy property in Ireland and eventually get citizenship.

Thanks in advance.
