Cost of phone charges when online

Hi, I have been here in Italy for about a year now, and have unsuccessfully been able to find an economical way to stay linked to the internet for a long period of time. I have 2 of the free servers downloaded on my computer, that is no problem. What I need to find out if there is a "cheap" way to stay connected. I have one of those deals with the phone ocmpany now where I pay a certain amount each month adn get free locale calls and 20 hours free internet, but I am online somedays for 5-6 hours a day!!! The timed calls are killing my budget. Am I missing out on something here? I have lived in several countries and this is by far the most expensive so far to try to stay connected because of the per minute/second charges. Any information out there?
