Retirement in Italy

Just joined and would like some info. Wife and I are looking to retire to Italy (Campania area) in the next 5-8 years. I know it is a bit off, but I am just starting to do research! My Great Grandfather was born and raised in Avellino, came to the US in 1898, so I do have some Italian roots.
I have read that retiring in Italy coming from the US is a bit easier than relocating there and needing to work? My wife and I would not be looking for work and we would be 100% retired.
I hope the dollar comes back a bit againest the Euro but have major doubts! We are looking to buy a small home/small villa and just enjoy the people, country, history and Italian lifestyle.
Any suggestions, info, ideas, opinions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance!
