medical insurance for tourist visa

I want to file visa application (under tourist category) for my family while I have already got visa, type D, for 365 days to carry out postdoctoral research in an Italian university. The university said in the hosting agreement that it will cover the medical insurance coverage for me and for my family during their stay in Italy.
The university personnel already intimated the Italian Embassy in India that my family will be covered by SSN and it is their responsibility to get us registered.
I wonder if in that case I can leave aside the overseas medical insurance for 30,000 Euro/person required for the tourist visa.
