credit cards

I have had some longterm relationships with my credit card issuers. Does anyone have any experiences with US cards when used over a prolonged period of time overseas (Italy). I'd like to continue these relationships, but do US banks get uptight when you move overseas? One downside is that I will be assessed a fee for foreign transactions (one card, though, Capital One doesn't assess a foreign transaction charge yet -- typically 3%). Also, how difficult is it to get a card in Italy as a newly arrived resident with dual citizenshiip?? Any surprises with terms, conditions or fees? Whatever info I get on this topic will be helpful to my planning. Thanks much, Tom
