Exstended stay - car advice needed

We are planning and looking to buy a vacation (and someday retirement maybe) property in Abruzzo. We have some good prospects and are visiting in October to check them out.
Now we are thinking about the ramifications if we go forward. We would plan on using the property 2-3 times a year for 1-3 months at a time. We would need a car and rentals are not cheap.
Can we buy and insure as homeowners or would we need to continue to rent or possibly lease? Any help and advice is appreciated!
