Learning Italian as a second language: What materials are best?

I’ll be headed to Italy within the next year and want to begin the process of learning to speak Italian before leaving. I’ve look at Rosetta Stone and would like to know what other materials are recommended.

While the Rosetta Stone is well regarded, I would like to get started using materials that are ideal for building a simple vocabulary and that also introduce the concepts of sentence structure and word usage.

I’m hoping that I can find some materials that are easy on the budget before committing to a more expensive product like Rosetta Stone.
