national visa application question

My husband and I want to spend a year in Italy with our kids - we've been told that the National visa (elective residence) is the most difficult to obtain, especially if we have kids. Does anyone have any info about what amount of money is needed for "proof of financial means"? Or any suggestions for what to provide that will best help our chances of being granted a visa? Thanks!
