Car Purchase or Rental

Prego, indulge me. Now that I am getting close to moving to Italy, I am dreaming up all these questions I hadn't thought of before. I have dual citizenship (US and Italian) and will need a car when in Italy. I know I'll need to take a test for my drivers license (per l'amore di dio!) and hope I can buy some time by using my US drivers license and/or the International Drivers License I've used when on vacation in Italy. If I want to buy a car right away (after officially registering as a resident in Italy), is it OK without an Italian drivers license? If not, I guess I'll need to rent a car for an extended period. Has anyone already faced this situation? Advice? Thanks AGAIN! tom
