Taxer vs residency

We have a property in Italy and are pretty much always hit with extra fees as we are not Italian citizens. It has been suggested that we file for residency, staying for a few months until we receive it. Does anyone know if the savings is so big to be worth the cost of 4 months or so of staying in Italy. While we do eventually plan to live there at least half time. I have grown children, parents and a young grandson here that would be affected by my long absence. That being said, the adventure and immersion in to the Tuscan countryside will not hurt my feelings??
